The founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute talks about the findings of a recent study.

Irving, TX, – Men diagnosed with prostate cancer may find their doctors recommending a medication most commonly associated with controlling cholesterol levels in the blood. A new study has found that statin use after cancer diagnosis may have positive impacts on lowering prostate cancer mortality risk.

The study that arrived at those findings involved more than 31,000 men with prostate cancer. The men were split into two groups based on statin use after diagnosis. Researchers ultimately found that men who received statins following diagnosis had a 17 percent lower risk of mortality than men who did not.

“This study’s findings are quite encouraging,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “Statins are already readily available and widely prescribed to lower cholesterol levels. If the findings hold up to further scrutiny, their use may add to the interventions currently in use that help prevent prostate cancer mortality.”

How soon additional study may be performed to back the findings remains unclear. Researchers did not that statin use prior to diagnosis did not seem to have an impact on mortality rates. The reasons behind the perceived benefits were not looked into during the study.

Prostate cancer is expected to strike more than 161,000 American men in the next 12 months. Since all men are at risk for this disease as they age, it is strongly recommended men speak with their healthcare providers about their personal risks and the need for routine screen. In most cases, screening should begin in later middle age, but certain risks may necessitate earlier screening.

“Routine screening is key to keeping mortality rates low for this form of cancer,” says Dr. Echt. “Early intervention can and does lead to positive outcomes for many men. Statin use may someday add to the numbers.”
